Borgo Pace

Situated 82.9 km from the sea, at the foot of the "Alpe della Luna" in the Apennine mountains, where the Meta and Auro torrents meet to form the Metauro River, this is an ideal place for a peaceful holiday surrounded by nature. From here, the road climbs up to the Bocca Trabaria Pass (1044m) before heading down to Sansepolcro and the Tiber Valley.
It was only relatively recently, in 1827, that the town became a separate municipality when Pope Leo XII made it capital of the surrounding Apennine district, including the ancient castles of Lamoli, Castel dei Fabbri, Sompiano, Palazzo dei Mucci, Parchiule and Dese. Its origins, however, can be traced back to Castrum Abbatiae (Castel Bavia) built on a nearby hilltop in the early Medieval period to defend the abbey at Lamoli. It was the population which moved down from this hilltop settlement into the valley who formed Burgus Pacis (the Borgo of the Peace) at the place where, according to ancient tradition, Octavian, Mark Antony and Lepidus met in 42 BC to form the Second Triumvirate. The town was then for centuries the centre of Massa Trabaria, the area producing the huge tree trunks (trabes) used in the construction of the roofs of the great basilicas and major public buildings in Rome. The modern church of Santa Maria Nuova in the town itself conserves a 15th Century painting ("Madonna with Child") from the Umbrian School and a lovely 16th Century statue group in polychrome majolica. Among the more interesting monuments in this area, it is worth mentioning the Romanesque abbey of San Michele Arcangelo at Lamoli, built in the form of a three nave basilica, which conserves early sculptural fragments in the crypt. The apse of the small church of San Leone at Figiano is entirely decorated with 14th Century frescoes, while at the church of Santa Maria at Parchiule there is a beautiful picture ("Madonna of the Rosary") painted by the Fossombrone artist Gianfrancesco Guerrieri in 1636.
Also at Borgo Pace is the so-called 'Aula Verde' (Green Room), situated at the confluence of the Meta and the Auro, with aquariums for fresh water fish and crustaceans, and 'Il Centro di Educazione Ambientale' (the Environmental Education Centre).
