This classic Apennine village, with its sturdy castle and ancient borgo, stands on the crest of a wooded hill below the eastern slopes of Monte Catria (1702m) in a position of strategic importance.
The Frontone area was certainly inhabited from the earliest times. However, the first document in which Frontone is specifically mentioned dates from 7th July 1072 and relates to a church belonging to the monastery of Santa Croce di Fonte Avellana described as San Fortunato "by Monte Frontone". Frontone belonged to the Gubbio family of Gabrielli from 1300 to 1420 and then passed to the Counts of Montefeltro, thus becoming part of the Dukedom of Urbino. Sigismondo Malatesta tried to take the castle in 1445 but this failed thanks to the personal intervention of Federico da Montefeltro and it was for this reason that the Duke of Urbino later commissioned the great military architect Francesco di Giorgio Martini to strengthen the existing castle. It was further expanded when Duke Francesco Mario II Della Rovere gave Frontone to Gianmaria Della Porta, a nobleman from Modena, in recognition for his services. The castle became the property of the town of Frontone in 1985 and it is now in the process of being restored.
During the winter time, Frontone is linked by cable lift to the snowy slopes of Monte Acuto (1500m), while in springtime and above all in the summer it is possible to trek up to the summits of Monte Acuto and Monte Catria - there are various signed footpaths and tourist refuges on its wooded slopes.
