A farming town in the Montefeltro area which stands on the left bank of the Upper Foglia Valley, where it is joined by the Mutino mountain torrent.
It dates back to the medieval period, when the borgo was built at the foot of the castle during the 14th century. A few ruins of the castle survive today. Lunano became an important town under the rule of the Brancaleone family, who were dispossessed by Cardinal Albornoz in 1358 but restored to power by Pope Boniface IX in 1392. Subsequently it passed from the Brancaleone family to Count Guidantonio da Montefeltro in 1420 and was later incorporated within the lands of the future Duke of Urbino. The parish church of Santi Cosma e Damiano is a 19th Century neo-classical building with an elegant pointed bell tower. A narrow lane leads up to the picturesque ruins of the old castle (and in particular the remains of a tower) which stand on the hill behind the town and are now grown over with ivy. Continuing onwards, the lane arrives at the Convento di Monte Illuminato (415m) with its delightful medieval bell tower. The church interior is decorated with 15th and 16th Century frescoes.
The area is now developing into a centre for the furniture industry.
