A mountain district made up of various small villages. They lie scattered across the slopes of Monte Carpegna (1415 m) which are furrowed by the upper reaches of the Conca and Marzocco torrents.
It was in this mountain hollow that the lands of Montefeltro were first born, when Emperor Frederick Barbarossa conferred the title of Count of Montefeltro upon Antonio of Carpegna in 1140. The Castle of Montecopiolo stood on an important mountain route and a vital geographical point between the valleys which led down to Marecchia and Conca rivers and was one of the strongest in the area. It resisted repeated attacks by Sigismondo Malatesta (1448) but not those of Lorenzo de'Medici, who destroyed it in 1520. Beneath it stands the village of Villagrande which did not become part of the Montecopiolo district until the 19th Century. Villagrande is now a well known ski resort, equipped with ski lifts.
Il Lago di Villagrande (974 m), the lake which provides one of the sources of the Conca River, is an attractive place to walk to.
