Stands on a spur of chalky rock, a few kilometres away from the central reaches of the Conca Valley, a short drive away from Mercatino Conca.
This was the ancient town of Sassoferetrano, also known as early as the 8^th century by the name of Serra del Sasso. Though the town is still protected by its escarpment wall, it lost its fine castle many years ago - only a few traces remain. The Malatestas had built a fortress here in the 14^th Century but Federico da Montefeltro commissioned Francesco di Giorgio Martini to build a new one when he took possession of it.
In the Valle Sant' Anastasio district there is a spring which is well known for the quality of its sulphurous and alkaline waters.
